PSYC 18562 – The Yoga moms dressed in their best Lululemo

Assignment 3 (Due Saturday March 5th 11:59 PM).Observations and Survey Questions Now that you have compared the two establishments from a business perspective it is time to get out and see that is going on in two specific business locations (one location of each business). The two specific locations you choose should be in close geographic proximity. This allows one to disregard location as a primary factor in consumer choice. Identify the geographical locations of the two businesses in your post. You will need to make at least 5 visits to each location. It is best if these visits are on different days and at different times. At Central Market, for example, on Sunday morning there is an “after church” crowd but on a weekday morning one finds the Yoga moms dressed in their best Lululemon. Information gathered from your observations should be entered into your BBLearn journal space with the time and date of each visit. Once you have competed your observations you will need to organize this data in a table that compares and contrasts what you saw at the two businesses. It will help if you collect and organize these observations topically. Here is a hypothetical example.TopicABC GroceryEFG GroceryWhat Happens in The StoreShopped progress down well lit isles. Everyone has a large shopping basket. Many baskets are filled to capacity. There are a lot of parents with childrenSome isles are well lit while others have motion detectors that increase lighting as shoppers pass. Shoppers have both large and smaller carts. Most shoppers seem to be aloneEntranceThere is a greeter who seems totally bored by the job.Pick up shopping basket outside store. Enter directly into produce section. There is no greeter but some produce and garden items are for sale at the curb. The overall atmosphere is cheerful and welcoming harking back to a pervious ideal of small town shoppingStore OrganizationNormal set up produce first and lot of long isles. The labeling for isles is poor and it seems that most people go up and down every isleThe organization more closely resembles a traditional grocery store. Pet supplies, health care and household items are in a separate area. The isle are well identified and people seems to only travel down some isles (note Are the isles with motion detectors less traveled? What items are on these isles)Customer AppearanceNew TopicNext you need to consider deeply what are the experiential differences that result in attracting different types of customers to the two stores. These are your study hypotheses. Let’s for the moment consider Best Buy and Fry’s. Best Buy has lots of associates on the floor and really pushes service contracts. Fry’s is pretty much a find it yourself and check it out business. One might hypothesize that BB customers are less tech savvy and appreciate the security of a service contract. One question I might ask is How confident are you in setting up a new computer (a) very confident (b) somewhat confident (c) not confident. Remember in developing questions this is NOT a customer satisfaction survey. The question we what to answer is what are some of the individual differences that distinguish customers of these businesses. You will need to develop FIVE MULTIPLE CHOICE questions based on your observations. Each question should be designed to answer ONE HYPOTHESIS about what distinguishes customers. There should be a clear connection between what you observed, your hypotheses and the multiple choice questions. Part of your grade will depend on how well you connect your observations, hypotheses and questions. Your grade will reflect the insightfulness of your questions; how well you can infer “value” and personality differences from your observations. You MUST explain the connection between observations and questions; How did what you saw lead to the hypothesis. You MUST also state your expectations of how the question will differentiate among customers of each business. For example if you think one business is more likely to be frequented by individuals concerned with style and the other by more traditional folks, you might ask about music or clothing preferences.A sample item might be:Hypothesis, the patrons of ABC are trendy and into current fashion whereas the patrons of XYZ are traditional and pay little attention to fashion.1. My car radio tend to be tuned toA. JazzB. Hip-hopC. Classic RockD. CountryThe expectation is that individuals who are into trendy clothes would also be into trendy music and prefer jazz or hip-hop over classical rock or jazz. In contrast the traditional folks are expected to more often select classical rock or country.Remember that this is NOT a customer satisfaction survey. Customers are satisfied when they get what they want and they shop where they believe that will get what they want. We are trying to establish the differences in the desires, values, personality etc of the customers who frequent the two businesses. Moreover the differences in the values and experiences created at the two businesses should reflect the differences among the customers. These questions should be in the form of a select response survey that you will administer to at least 15 customers of each business
