The U.S. has a relatively high level of economic inequality compared to other economically developed countries. The U.S. also has higher levels of poverty than these other countries. Yet most Americans do not believe that their society is divided between “haves” and “have-nots”. What do you think could be the cause of this apparent contradiction? Is there anything peculiar about the American history, politics, culture or economy that you feel contributes to our reluctance to think in terms of class divisions? Can you provide an example of how your proposed explanation works?
